Michigan Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (MAHPERD)
is dedicated to the promotion of the organization of School, Community, and
National programs for health education, physical education, recreation and dance
which will embody such opportunities and which will insure the inclusion of such
programs within the best philosophical and social context of American life.
Michigan Association of Middle School Educators (MAMSE) is the oldest middle level professional
organization in the country. Members include all who are interested in the education
of young adolescents -- teachers, administrators, supervisors, parents, college
personnel, state department officials and students. As an affiliate of the National
Middle School Association, MAMSE is the official voice for Michigan's middle
level people.
Envisioning a world of justice and peace with dignity and respect for all, MANS
advocates for and provides services to educators and parents, parishes and
congregations, to establish and enhance quality faith-based schools that will
nurture, challenge and support children and youth.
The mission of the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals is to
promote excellence in school leadership by serving, supporting and raising
recognition of its members, and on their behalf, advocating education system
improvements for the benefit of students, teachers, principals and schools
throughout Michigan.
The Michigan Community College Association is the primary advocate for
Michigan's twenty-eight public community colleges. MCCA is organized to
achieve the collective state legislative and other goals of its member colleges,
and to advocate the benefits of community college services for the citizens of
the State of Michigan. Our mission is to provide leadership on issues affecting
member colleges.
We recognize and promote effective social studies in education to our members
and stakeholders by providing leadership in identifying significant instructional
and curricular issues; encouraging and engaging in program development with
respect to issues of significance to social studies education; disseminating
research and development information, innovative instructional procedures and
new materials via publications, workshops, conferences, and public forums
to educate the general educational community; supporting the programs
of the National Council for the Social Studies; and establishing linkage
with institutions and members who have similar professional purposes.
The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) oversees public school districts
and is overseen by the State Board of Education. The MDE and Board of Education
are responsible for leadership and general supervision over all public education
and serves as the general planning and coordinating body for all public education,
including higher education, and advises the legislature as to financial requirements.
The MHSAA is a private, not-for-profit corporation of voluntary membership by over
1,500 public and private senior high schools and junior high/middle schools which
exists to develop common rules for athletic eligibility and competition. No
government funds or tax dollars support the MHSAA. Member schools which enforce
these rules are permitted to participate in MHSAA tournaments, which attract
approximately 1.6 million spectators each year.
